Aware's AccuRad™ REM Server Software Enables California Healthcare Providers To Comply With New Radiation Exposure Monitoring Mandate

BEDFORD, Mass., July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWRE), a global provider of biometrics and medical imaging software, today announced the availability of AccuRad REM Server software for use by healthcare providers to record and monitor the radiation doses delivered by their CT scanning equipment as required by California state law as of July 1, 2012. The legislation also requires that dose data be electronically distributed to PACS systems and that errors in dose delivery be reported. AccuRad REM Server is a centralized software application that runs on a healthcare provider's network and receives dose data from radiological equipment including CT scanners and fluoroscopy equipment.  It can then distribute the data in standard-compliant form to radiology reporting systems, PACS, and external data registries. It also provides advanced reporting functions through a browser-based user interface that clinicians can use to perform statistical analysis on the data.

"AccuRad REM Server simplifies SB 1237 compliance, but also integrates dose data into third-party reporting systems and enables analysis that can help clinicians reduce risks associated with radiological exams," commented Joe Kushi, Director of Sales. "It leverages Aware's expertise in imaging along with critical features of the mature AccuRad ImageShare Server platform, making it the most advanced solution currently available for dose monitoring."

More Information about AccuRad REM Server
Dose data is received from newer scanning equipment models in the form of digital structured reports (SR) that are either proprietary or compliant with DICOM and the IHE REM Integration Profile. From older equipment, AccuRad REM Server applies optical character recognition (OCR) to read image-based textual data and then structure the data in compliance with the IHE REM Integration Profile. It supports nearly all leading equipment models, and older legacy equipment can be quickly added to the list of supported systems. AccuRad REM Server stores and analyzes the dose data as it becomes available in order to calculate exposure information in near real-time. This allows clinicians to produce customized reports that summarize exposure estimation information by physician, modality, time/date, institution or other user-defined queries. It provides a rich, web-based user interface that enables direct access to exposure information as well as summary information through interactive statistical analysis tools. Reports can be manually created or automatically run at predetermined intervals.

AccuRad REM Server can be used in conjunction with third party reporting solutions to automatically populate radiology reports with dose data. It can also generate customized dose estimation information according to the IHE REM Integration Profile and upload the data to the American College of Radiology (ACR) Dose Index Registry (DIR) for comparison to external results.

Additional information about AccuRad REM Server is provided on Aware's website, and a white paper is available that discusses more details about radiation exposure monitoring.
